This single Closterium was found in my tiny garden pond (<1 square metre) today, and put under my microscope. It would be great if I could have some identification help, as I know some people are experts at these micro algae (like Dr Denton).
It is 182 x 25 microns.
Thank you,
James McCulloch
This was found on the same slide. Not sure if this is a Closterium or not. Seems to be attached to some filamentous algae.
Much larger, 593 x 56 microns.
Thank you,
James
Sorry, forgot to add the photo.
Hiya James, cracking pics!
Spurred on by your images I had a quick look online and found this website. It isn't in any way comprehensive but the pics are stunning! Best of luck with it, you've certainly opened my eyes to a previouslly hidden world. Just need more magnification now...

Also found this site which links out to other Desmid related sites. They really are pretty cool things! http://www.desmids.nl/info/introduction/desmids_introduction.html
A quick look on the NBN Gateway shows that it lists over 70 species of Closterium, the decent literature seems both expensive and out-dated. Maybe something for your Christmas List??? :) https://data.nbn.org.uk/Taxa/NHMSYS0000600869
Hi James,
If you still haven't identified it by now (because this post is 2 weeks old!) you could always put these or any other micro-algae on iSpot, as I know you are a member!
All the best,
Ben
Hi Ben and Seth,
Sorry I haven't replied to your comments, I didn't realise. I do use the sites Seth mentioned now. I've put a few of the identified ones on iSpot and I don't get any agreements from anyone other than one loyal user which always follows up on my evidence.
