Cladonia borealis

Cladonia borealis. The fifth member of the Cladonia coccifera aggregate. This is also more or less constant in shape. It appears to be a species covered with rather smooth squamules, and arising from a bed of similar basal squamules. This photograph was taken amongst dry sand dunes at De Stompert in the Netherlands, and pointed out to BLS members by local lichenologists. In Britain, it is a scarce species on upland, peaty soil.
