Lacking chlorophyll, this saprophytic liverwort grows in wet peaty soils beneath a carpet of Sphagnum. This patch, at Flitwick Moor in Bedfordshire, was among birch trees, and at first I was looking at the pinkish mycorrhizae on the tree roots  -  but the liverwort is much larger and unmistakeable.
