Xanthoria polycarpa

Xanthoria polycarpa, another very common lichens, expecially in areas where their are high levels of nitrogen compounds in the atmosphere such as around chicken farms. It occurs on twigs mostly, especially hawthorn and blackthorn. It differs from Xanthoria parieitna in the much smaller amount of bordering lobes to the thallus. Sometimes, especially when they are growing together, separating Xanthoria parieitna and polycarpa can be difficult. Photographed taken in Ditchling, Sussex.
