The following resources are available:

  Web page hosting
Easy NBN distribution maps for enhancing websites simply.
  Indicia, the on-line recording toolkit

Resources for researchers

We also supply information which may be of use to research scientists. This includes:

CLUSTASPEC - An R function to determine patterns in distribution, by Colin Harrower. CLUSTASPEC takes presence/absence data for a series of species and using this data attempt to looks for patterns in their occurrence. The download includes a readme file, together with the R script defining the clustaspec function. This script is freely available to download and use. The reference for citing CLUSTASPEC or the associated methodology, which we ask you to include in any publications incorporating analyses conducted using this function or based upon this clustering method, is
Preston, C.D., Harrower, C.A. & Hill. M.O.
(2011) Distribution patterns in British and Irish liverworts and hornworts. Journal of Bryology, 33: 3-17.
Frescalo - a computer program to analyse your biological records, by Mark Hill, August 2011. Frescalo estimates species richness and time trends when recording effort is uneven. The download includes a readme file, together with a worked example and supplementary programs to define neighbourhoods of individual grid cells. For the theoretical background, see Hill (2011) in Methods in Ecology and Evolution.
Database of Insects and their Foodplants This database is primarily a collation of published interactions between Great Britain's invertebrate herbivores (insects and mites) and their host plants.

PLANTATT - Attributes of British and Irish plants. (.zip 1455KB) This dataset was compiled and published in 2004, and last updated in November 2008. Download includes an Excel spreadsheet of the attributes, and a PDF explaining the background and nomenclature. Note that the PDF version is the booklet as published, whereas the Excel spreadsheet incorporates subsequent corrections.
A hardcopy can be purchased from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

BRYOATT - Attributes of British and Irish mosses, liverworts and hornworts. (.zip 427KB) This dataset was published in 2007, as a companion to PLANTATT. Download includes an Excel spreadsheet of the attributes, and a PDF explaining the background and nomenclature.

Atlas of the Seed and Leaf Beetles of Britain and Ireland, by Michael L. Cox. Pisces Publications, Newbury 2007, is available from the publishers.
Supplementary material (.zip 496 KB) is a Word document containing more detailed species accounts.

An audit of non-native species in England has been published by English Nature (now Natural England). Download the data behind the report here.

A dichotomous key to subfamilies of Ichneumonidae in Britain and Ireland

PLEASE NOTE - you will need the Adobe Reader plug-in for your browser in order to view the maps we have available. If you do not already have it (you will receive an error message if you do not), it can be downloaded from the Adobe website (opens in a new window).
