iRecord App 1.2.0

Dear All,

We have finished developing a new iRecord App update and it should be out fairly soon. I am now looking for people to test the new functionality in the field in the next week or so. Here is an Android link. Please let me know if you are on iOS.

Here are the changes:

  • Updated the species list
  • Improved mapping: new layers, display grid reference
  • Added Identifiers option
  • Added basic statistics page
  • Added location name and species suggestions
  • Past location management: editing, making sticky favorite
  • Fixed bugs

Best regards,
Karolis

As the old version is still

As the old version is still giving me the "jQuery" location bug which is preventing me from recording anything I'm keen to see if this new version works.

A few comments after

A few comments after downloading the trial app.

Like the improved mapping interface and the sticky lis t of previous psecies. Looking forwards to trying it out when I check the moth traps tomorrow.

Noticed that the following species were still missing though:

Cryphia domestica
Acrobasis advenella

Kind regards

Paul

Agree - new map layers are excellent and I'm so glad locking a date in the past works now!  Still missing a few species names though - I couldn't find Marbled Beauty this morning.

I'll keep playing and see if I can find any isses - but so far a great update!

Hi Karolis,

Hi Karolis,

I have installed the trial app on my iPad and used it with great success on the moth traps this morning.

Is it possible to send a second invite so I can try it on the iPhone too. I tend to use rhe iPhone for ad hoc recording.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul, nice to hear that. I wonder if you could reuse the same invitation? Otherwise, I will send you another one.

Hi Karolis,

Hi Karolis,

The Apple software tells me that the invitation as been redeemed and that a new one is required to install on the iPhone. For once a message that is human readable!

Hi Karolis,

Hi Karolis,

I've been happily using the test version since you sent me the link.  However on Sunday the app decided to log me out and dump all my saved locations again.  My phone was running out of space again but it still had a few hundred megabytes left.  Other than that (and a few missing species still) it is a much better version.

Hi Matt,

Hi Matt,

The link should not have changed.

iRecord App Trial 1.2.0

I have enjoyed trialing the new version of the app and have some (positive) feedback.

iPad WiFi only version (No internal GPS)
* Location works while attached to BT domestic broadband.  Does not work while connected to Three mobile hot spot.
* Saved locations work well.

iPhone 6s
Location work well.
Upload works with pictures but location updated if a picture is added retrospectively.
Submits records by 4G very quickly.

Missing Species

* Cryphia domestica
* Acrobasis advenella

Comments
* Sticky list of species not as useful as I expected as all names converted to common even if scientific used to enter.  This contrasts with the behaviour when entering directly, where name is conserved as the record is saved.
* Adding photo's retrospectively to a record on the previous version of the app duplicated the records and updated the location to the place where the photo's were added. Needed to put this right by hand on the website. On the new trial version of the app this behaviour seems to no longer duplicate the record but does update the location. It may be an idea to offer a warning or choice: "Should location be updated" or similar.
* Upload saved records seems to work more reliably on a single pass with the updated app.
* The statistics list is fun. Might be nice to include species recorded today, number of species etc.
* A “sensitive record” button would be useful. I found I refrained from recording a couple of species because I did not want to accidentally post the records with an accurate location. In the case of the bird, the record was time sensitive, in the case of the orchid, I was not too sure how well the location is known. An alternative would be to mark the record “not for upload” until ready.

Overall Comment

A huge timesaver and great to work with!

IPad and iPhone update wipes saved sites

Hi,

Just applied the iOS 10.0.2 update and found that it wiped all my saved locations on the App 1.20 I am using on trial. Pity, since I found this facility to be useful. When applying updates on Apple devices it is probably worth making sure that any records are also saved to the server, just in case the same happens to those as well.

Hope this might save someone else the same inconvenience.

Hi Paul,

Hi Paul,

Sorry to hear that, this is just another reason why I need to refactor the app's internal storage. Looks like under low memory and now system updates it is cleared. This shouldn't happen to records though as they are saved using this different storage (slower, but more secure).

Thanks,
Karolis
