A scrambling annual of hedgerows, scrub and wood-borders, and of rough grassland on roadsides, railway banks and coastal cliffs; also found in disturbed places, including urban waste ground and arable field margins. Lowland.
There appears to be little change in the distribution of V. tetrasperma since the 1962 Atlas, but county floras report declines throughout the range. The status of some records in N.W. England and Scotland is uncertain.
European Temperate element, but widely naturalised so distribution is now Circumpolar Temperate.
