An annual to biennial herb which grows on roadsides, soil banks and re-seeded verges. It arises as a contaminant of grain and grass-seed, and from bird-seed. Lowland.

Native of the Mediterranean region; found as a casual and sometimes naturalised further north in Europe and in N. America.
