An annual largely restricted to open mud and muddy sand on intertidal flats and in the lowest parts of saltmarshes. Lowland.
S. fragilis was described as a new species by Ball & Tutin (1959), but was not mapped in the 1962 Atlas. It is almost certainly under-recorded, and perhaps also mis-identified as S. dolichostachya which occurs in similar habitats. Some authorities consider that it is a variety of the latter species (Rich & Jermy, 1998).
