December 2014

20th Sep 2014 - West Weald Fungus Recording Group...and a twitch!

Steve Gale - friend, birder, moth-er, botanist and author of the absolutely fantastic North Downs and Beyond website had recently posted an intriguing blog. He'd somehow caught wind of an incredibly rare plant that was flowering at three sites in Surrey and had managed to obtain some great pics of it soon afterwards. Have a read for yourselves here http://northdownsandbeyond.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/a-starfruit-is-born.html I'd never even heard of...

14th Sep 2014 - Taming of the Lyons

After all the Facebook chitter chatter and mouthwatering pics of rare plants, Graeme Lyons decided he couldn't hold out any longer and asked for a tour of the New Forest specialities. No problemo, let's face it - he's shown me enough goodies in the past. This would be my turn to treat him to a few lifers. First up though, have a read of Graeme's account of the day on his blog at http://analternativenaturalhistoryofsussex.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/new-forest-gump.html

We met in the White...

13th Sep 2014 - Meeting Dave Gibbs...at last!

I had a bit of a bizarre FB happening whereby Dave Gibbs asked me if I'd like to join him for a day in the New Forest along with Tony Davis. Who I then had to pretty much plead with to allow me to tag along! Turns out the two of them had secret plans for later that night (no, not those kinda plans you filthy bugger) which didn't involve me. Some highly dodgy shenanigans, I suspect. But I was only free during the day so I ended up tagging along regardless... and I'm so glad I did because I've never met Dave before, we all saw loads, and everyone came away with a good few lifers. Especially...

9th Sep 2014 (cont) - Muddy Waters

There was still plenty of light in the sky as I headed southwards. Feeling like the day had more to offer I diverted towards an old favourite of mine - Farlington Marshes on the north shore of Langstone Harbour. I first came here in April 1987 with the YOC (happy days!) and saw my first ever Little Terns, Black-tailed Godwits, White Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail, Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat. I came back the following winter and added Brent Goose, Red-breasted Merganser and Grey Plover to my birdlist. Then Spotted Redshank, Grey Phalarope and a pair of Penduline Tits. Other...

9th Sep 2014 - Plantastic Times!

Decided to head further afield today, waaaay up to Woolmer Forest just south of Bordon in North Hants. I've been here before in search of Natterjacks (missed 'em every time...) and it's a great area. One patch I particularly enjoy mooching across consists of a recently cleared drainage channel with the spoil heaped up alongside and what seems to be an old carpark area. The whole thing is covered in colonising ruderals and I never know what I'm going to find next. It'll be crap in a few years, but at the moment it's an exciting spot with Slow Worms and Grass Snakes under the rubbish and...

8th Sep 2014 - Clearly I've got the New Forest Bug!

OK, so without wanting to sound like a stuck record (anyone even remember those?) I found myself back in the New Forest once more. Addicted. I aimed myself at Matley Bog, determined to find something good. Guess what, I did too! I headed into an area full of Bog Myrtle and heathers and soon spied a lovely female Thomisus onustus hiding on heather bells. I've only seen two of these before, both on Thursley Common last year. Stunning wee critters. So I was doubly pleased to find a second female a short while later, coolness! Far better even than that, I then found my first...

7th Sep 2014 - First Fungus Foray of the Autumn

I had a day off work and wasn't sure what to do with myself. Scanning through a few websites I suddenly noticed that the Southampton Natural History Society (see their site at http://www.sotonnhs.org/ ) were holding a flowers and butterflies/fungus foray in Southampton Old Cemetery in an hours time! Cool, better get my arse into gear...

An hour later I joined a group of over 20 folks all loitering at the entrance gate. Several gave me a curious look. Hmmm...had I just brazenly tagged myself onto someone's funeral? Then one chap stepped forward...

6th Sep 2014 - A New Forest Endemic!

Can't seem to keep away from the New Forest at the minute, another spur of the moment traipse in search of a botanical delight with Tony Davis (led by Tony Davis, to be precise). This time our target was the ridiculously localised New Forest Bladderwort (Utricularia bremii). Its current known British distribution is a small pond and adjacent large puddle at Shatterford. That's it! For a plant believed to be native (it also occurs in Europe) that is one frighteningly tiny distribution. It was only recognised in the 1990s, I believe the chap that discovered it had to wait several years for...

The first of December, the last of the fungi?

The first blog of December!

The arrival of frosts and colder weather has started the end of the fungi season, but what an end to a fantastic season! Larch is proving a very interesting host locally (Surrey/Sussex/Hampshire borders) and I have been looking around plantations for fungi. Some are heavily overgrown with bracken and bramble but others are remarkably clear and often seem to host interesting fungi. Laccaria sp. are the most numerous but some other, much rarer, species are regular.
