Species account
Elipsocus abdominalis A moderately small (c.2.5-3.5mm) barkfly. Uncommon in Britain and Ireland.
Elipsocus abdominalis The abdomen (both female and male) is mainly white with variable dark stripes. The abdomen colour is the only character that can be used to identify male Elipsocus species.
Elipsocus abdominalis Female
The dark patches in the basal half of the forewing are characteristic of the females of all British Elipsocus species. This species is distinguished by having a clearly defined patch over the areola postica cell and almost colourless wings.
Elipsocus abdominalis Female
Pale crescents present on the head.
Elipsocus abdominalis Female
The epiproct (apex of abdomen) has a brown basal area that merges gradually into the colourless apex.
Compare with similar species
Elipsocus abdominalis Male
The wing is largely colourless and lacks any distinguishing features from other Elipsocus species. The pale abdomen indicates that this is E. abdominalis.
