Welcome to the Biological Records Centre website

The Biological Records Centre (BRC), established in 1964, is the national focus in the UK for terrestrial and freshwater species recording (other than birds). It works with the voluntary recording community throughout Britain and Ireland. The BRC database contains over 15 million records of more than 12000 species.

BRC is the national custodian of data on the distribution of wildlife in the British Isles. (FIND OUT MORE...)

New Head of BRC

David Roy has been appointed as head of BRC, with effect from 1 July 2010. His predecessor, Mark Hill, retires on 31 July 2010. Many of you will know David from his work on the Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, and as a longstanding contributor to many BRC projects. BRC is now firmly established at CEH Wallingford, after two very busy and happy years since we moved from Monks Wood. David is ideally qualified to take the unit forward, taking full advantage of the amazing new opportunities that have become available through the internet.
